Product details
Carrier chair "Palanquin" in richly carved wood decorated with characters, flowers, dragons.
19th century period
A sedan chair was a cabin equipped with stretchers and carried on men's arms, used to move individually. Unlike the litter of the Romans or the men of the Middle Ages where the passenger was lying down, it offers a seat that allows to travel in a seated position and limits the number of porters.
A handy and space-saving means of urban transportation, the sedan chair was widely used by "people of quality" in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century.
On other continents, it is presented in somewhat different forms; in Asia, in particular, the sedan chair can take many forms, the most characteristic of which is undoubtedly the palanquin.
